Place any particle on the standard-model chart

Which statement about the Higgs boson is correct?

Thirteen particle names now live in this topic. On the standard-model chart, every one of them sits in exactly one of three groups. Can you place them all without stopping to think?

Two questions sort any particle on the chart. Question one: is it a matter particle? Question two: if yes, is it one of the six quark flavors?

A matter particle that is one of the six flavors is a quark. A matter particle that is not a flavor is a lepton. A particle that is not a matter particle is a boson.

A simplified standard-model chart, now with the Higgs. The full chart lists six leptons; these are the two this course names.

Work the chart with the two questions. The top is a matter particle, and it is one of the six flavors. So the top is a quark.

But the electron is a matter particle that is not one of the six flavors. So the electron is a lepton.

The photon is not a matter particle. So the photon is a boson.

And the Higgs carries no force, but it is still not a matter particle. So the Higgs is a boson. Boson membership is decided by not being a matter particle, never by whether a force is carried.

The strange is a matter particle, and it is one of the six flavors. So the strange is a quark.

But the proton is not on the chart at all. The proton is composite, made of smaller particles, and the chart lists only fundamental particles.

So every particle on the chart answers the two questions: quark, lepton, or boson.

Place the charm on the chart: quark, lepton, or boson?

The charm is a matter particle, and it is one of the six flavors.

The charm is a quark.

Place the neutrino on the chart: quark, lepton, or boson?

The neutrino has no charge and almost no mass, but it is still a matter particle.

It is not one of the six flavors.

The neutrino is a lepton.

Quick-fire drill

Here are six quick sorts. Ask the two questions each time: is it a matter particle, and is it one of the six flavors?

On the chart, is the gluon a quark, a lepton, or a boson?

On the chart, is the down a quark, a lepton, or a boson?

On the chart, is the neutrino a quark, a lepton, or a boson?

On the chart, is the bottom a quark, a lepton, or a boson?

On the chart, is the Higgs a quark, a lepton, or a boson?

On the chart, is the electron a quark, a lepton, or a boson?

Your turn

On a standard-model chart, the strange is listed as which kind of particle?

Which of these chart particles is a boson?

Which of these chart particles is a lepton?
