← Quarks, leptons, and the four fundamental forces

Quarks come in six flavors

The quarks inside protons and neutrons are not the only quarks there are. When physicists create new particles in high-energy collisions, other kinds of quark appear. Ordinary matter never shows them.

First, a fact about every quark: quarks are fundamental particles. No experiment has ever found anything smaller inside a quark.

Counting them all, the quark family has six members. The six types of quark are called flavors. The word is a label, not a taste.

Quarks are fundamental, and they come in six flavors: up, down, charm, strange, top, and bottom.

All six flavors are quarks, and every one is fundamental.

How many flavors of quark are there? Enter the number.

Strange really is the name of a quark flavor. So are charm, top, and bottom. Treat all six words as names.

Which of the following is a quark flavor?

A particle listed in a data book is labeled 'charm.' What kind of thing is charm?

Charm is on the list of six quark flavors: up, down, charm, strange, top, and bottom.

Charm is the name of a quark flavor.

Which list gives only quark flavors?
