Read a standing wave diagram

Kerstin photographs a standing wave on a lab cord: three equal swinging sections between the two clamped ends. Her worksheet says to mark every node and every antinode.

A standing wave diagram hides nothing. Every node and antinode sits in plain sight, once you know where to look.

Each swinging section between two motionless points is one loop. Kerstin's cord shows three loops.

Nodes sit where the cord never moves: at the two clamped ends, and at every meeting point of two loops.

On the photo the nodes are one at each end, plus two between the loops. 3 + 1 = 4, so three loops give four nodes.

Antinodes sit at the middle of each loop, where the cord oscillates with maximum amplitude.

Each loop holds exactly one antinode, so three loops give three antinodes.

Three loops: four nodes, counting both ends, and three antinodes.
The counts always work this way. A pattern's nodes are one more than its loops, and its antinodes equal its loops.

A photo shows a standing wave with two loops between the clamped ends. Counting both ends, how many nodes does it have?

Nodes sit at both ends and wherever two loops meet.

2 + 1 = 3

Three nodes.

The same two-loop photo: how many antinodes does it have?

Each loop holds one antinode at its middle.

Two antinodes.
