← Angled launches: the full toolkit

Steeper launch, less forward speed

Air resistance is ignored. Lior says a ball that left a shelf moving horizontally at 4 m/s still has a horizontal velocity of 4 m/s just before it lands. Is he correct?

A steeper throw stays in the air longer. Hang time is not the whole story. Beside the flat throw, the steep throw shows something else: while it hangs, it barely moves forward.

The launch speed stays fixed and the angle still tilts; only the question is new. The flight time ran on the vertical component. The forward motion runs on the other leg of the same triangle.

Here are the same two throws again. At 20 m/s and 30°, the split is 17.3 m/s forward and 10 m/s upward.

17.3 m/s horizontal component10 m/s vertical component20 m/s launch velocity at 30°30°
At 30°, 17.3 m/s of the launch velocity points forward. The shallow throw crosses the field quickly.

At 20 m/s and 60°, the split is 10 m/s forward and 17.3 m/s upward.

10 m/s horizontal component17.3 m/s vertical component20 m/s launch velocity at 60°60°
At 60°, only 10 m/s points forward. The steep throw hangs long but crawls forward.

The horizontal component is what carries the ball forward, and for a projectile it never changes in flight.

So the 30° throw moves forward at 17.3 m/s for its whole flight, and the 60° throw moves forward at 10 m/s for its whole flight.

The steeper throw moves forward more slowly, because a steeper launch aims more of the launch velocity upward and less of it forward.

The rule, at any one launch speed: the steeper the launch, the smaller the horizontal velocity component.

A volleyball is served at one set speed, first at 28°, then at 62°. Which serve moves forward more slowly while in flight?

The launch speed is the same both times.

The 62° serve is steeper.

A steeper launch aims more of the launch velocity upward and less of it forward.

Less forward velocity at launch means less forward velocity all flight long, because the horizontal component never changes in flight.

So the 62° serve moves forward more slowly.

A quarterback throws two passes at the same speed, at 30° and at 60°. Which pass moves forward faster while in flight?

At the same toss speed, how does a 70° bean-bag toss move forward compared with a 20° toss?

A T-shirt cannon fires at one set speed while its barrel is tilted from 25° up to 75°. What happens to the shirts' forward speed?

The launch speed is fixed, so tilting the barrel only redirects the launch velocity.

Each steeper setting aims more of the launch velocity upward and less of it forward.

So each steeper setting launches the shirt with a smaller horizontal component, and the shirt crosses the crowd more slowly.

The forward speed falls at every steeper setting.

A fountain's jet leaves at one fixed speed. Tilted steeper, the water drifts forward more slowly. Why?

A dart gun fires at one fixed speed. Its tilt is raised from 15° to 75° in steps. What happens to the darts' horizontal velocity component at launch?

The dart gun is tilted all the way to straight up, at the same speed. What is a dart's horizontal velocity component at launch?
