What a transformer is made of

Which parts make up an electromagnet?

A wall outlet supplies 120 V. A phone charges at about 5 V. Inside the charger, one small device bridges that gap.

That device is called a transformer. This lesson shows what a transformer is made of.

Here is what sits inside: two separate coils of insulated wire, wound on one iron loop.

The coil connected to the supply is called the primary coil.

The coil connected to the device is called the secondary coil.

The loop both coils wind on is a core of soft iron, the same metal an electromagnet's core uses.

The primary coil, the secondary coil, and the soft-iron core they share. Here the primary coil has 6 turns and the secondary coil has 3 turns.

Count the circuits: the primary coil belongs to the supply's circuit, and the secondary coil belongs to the device's circuit.

No wire runs from one coil to the other. The two coils have no electrical connection.

Which parts make up a transformer?

A 500-turn coil and a 100-turn coil sharing one iron loop make a transformer.

Any two coils wound on one soft-iron core, with no electrical connection between them, make a transformer.

What joins the primary coil to the secondary coil inside a transformer?

A doorbell circuit includes two coils wound on one iron loop, with no wire between them. What is this device?

Two coils on one soft-iron core, with no electrical connection, make a transformer.

The device is a transformer.

In that doorbell transformer, the coil wired to the house supply has 1200 turns. Which coil is it?

The coil connected to the supply is the primary coil.

The 1200-turn coil is the primary coil.

Type the name of the transformer coil that is connected to the supply.

A technician opens a transformer's case. Which description matches what she finds inside?

A transformer's primary coil joins a supply, and its secondary coil joins a lamp. How many separate circuits is that?

What is a transformer's core made of?
