Calculate a missing branch current

A battery supplies 1.2 A to two parallel branches, and the first branch's ammeter reads 0.8 A. The second branch's ammeter is missing. You do not need it.

A1.2 AA0.8 AR1R2
The supply carries 1.2 A and the first branch 0.8 A. The second branch's current is the question.

The branch currents add up to the supply current. So the two branches together must carry 1.2 A. The second branch carries what is left:

1.2 A − 0.8 A = 0.4 A

The routine: missing branch current = supply current − the branch currents you already know.

Careful with the trap: never assume the missing branch matches a known one. Here the branches carry 0.8 A and 0.4 A. An equal split would be wrong.

A battery supplies 1.7 A to two parallel branches. One branch carries 0.9 A. What current does the other branch carry?

Write down the rule: the branch currents add up to the supply current.

Subtract the known branch current from the supply current:

1.7 A − 0.9 A = 0.8 A

The other branch carries 0.8 A.

A battery supplies 1.5 A to two branches; one carries 0.6 A. What does the other carry, in A?

A battery supplies 2.6 A to three parallel branches. Two of them carry 1.1 A and 0.9 A. What current does the third branch carry?

Write down the rule: the branch currents add up to the supply current.

Subtract the known branch currents from the supply current:

2.6 A − 1.1 A − 0.9 A = 0.6 A

The third branch carries 0.6 A.

Five more. One step each.

A battery supplies 2.4 A to two branches; one carries 1.6 A. What does the other carry, in A?

A battery supplies 0.9 A to two branches; one carries 0.4 A. What does the other carry, in A?

A battery supplies 3.5 A to two branches; one carries 1.4 A. What does the other carry, in A?

Three branches share a 3.0 A supply; two carry 0.7 A and 0.9 A. What does the third carry, in A?

A battery supplies 1.8 A to two branches; one carries 1.1 A. What does the other carry, in A?

Your turn

A battery supplies 2.9 A to two parallel branches. One branch carries 1.6 A. What current does the other branch carry, in A?

A student finds a missing branch current by adding the supply current to the known branch current. Why is that wrong?

A battery supplies 5.0 A to three parallel branches. Two branches carry 1.9 A and 1.4 A. What current does the third branch carry, in A?
