One reading gives every ammeter

One ammeter reading in a series circuit hands you every other ammeter reading in it. This lesson makes that move quick.

6 VA0.4 AA1bulbAA2resistor
A1 reads 0.4 A. A2 shows no reading. What must it be?

You do not need a second measurement. In a series circuit, the current is the same at every point around the loop. So A2 reads what A1 reads: 0.4 A.

6 VA0.4 AA1bulbA0.4 AA2resistor
The current is the same at every point: A2 reads 0.4 A too.

Any ammeter, anywhere on the loop, reads the same value: before the battery, between components, after the last one. One reading, and you have them all.

In a series circuit, the ammeter next to the battery reads 0.4 A. What does the ammeter between the bulb and the resistor read?

Write down the rule:

In a series circuit, the current is the same at every point.

Read off:

Every ammeter on the loop reads the one value, 0.4 A.

The ammeter between the bulb and the resistor reads 0.4 A.

The ammeter by the battery reads 0.7 A. What does the ammeter between the bulbs read?

Ammeter A reads 0.45 A. What does ammeter B, two bulbs later, read?

An ammeter after the last resistor reads 0.3 A. What does the battery's ammeter read?

The same circuit is rebuilt with a weaker battery, and the ammeter between the bulb and the resistor now reads 0.15 A. What does the ammeter next to the battery read?

Write down the rule:

In a series circuit, the current is the same at every point.

Read off:

The given reading can sit anywhere on the loop. Every other ammeter matches that reading.

The ammeter next to the battery reads 0.15 A.

Ammeter P, by the battery, reads 0.52 A. What does ammeter Q, after the buzzer, read?

Two bulbs sit in one series loop. Which bulb carries more current?

An ammeter between two resistors reads 0.85 A. What does the battery's ammeter read?

Your turn

In the series circuit shown, ammeter A1 reads 0.6 A. What does ammeter A2 read?

9 VA0.6 AA1resistorbulbAA2

A series circuit contains a battery, a motor, and a buzzer. An ammeter next to the motor reads 0.48 A. What does an ammeter next to the battery read?

Three ammeters sit around one series loop: P by the battery, Q between the two bulbs, R after the second bulb. Q reads 0.9 A. Which statement is correct?
