Resistance: how strongly a component opposes the current

An ammeter is wired into the same single path as a buzzer. What does the ammeter read?

Two circuits sit on a test bench. Each has the same 6.0 V battery and one component. The first circuit's ammeter reads 0.60 A. The second circuit's ammeter reads only 0.06 A. The battery is the same. So why is one current ten times smaller?

6.0 VA0.60 A
The first circuit: 6.0 V, and the ammeter reads 0.60 A.
6.0 VA0.06 A
The second circuit: the same 6.0 V, but the ammeter reads only 0.06 A.

Both circuits have the same 6.0 V across their component. Only the components differ.

The second component opposes the current more strongly than the first.

Every component opposes the current through it to some degree. This opposition is called the component's resistance.

Resistance is measured in ohms, written Ω.

The first component's resistance is 10 Ω. The second component's resistance is 100 Ω.

Same voltage, different oppositionComponentCurrentResistancefirst resistor0.60 A10 Ωsecond resistor0.06 A100 Ω
The 100 Ω resistor opposes the current more strongly, so its circuit carries the smaller current.
More ohms means a stronger opposition to the current.

A 220 Ω resistor and a 22 Ω resistor sit in a parts tray. Which opposes the current through it more strongly?

Write down the fact:

Resistance measures how strongly a component opposes the current through it.

Compare the values:

220 Ω is a larger resistance than 22 Ω.

The 220 Ω resistor opposes the current through it more strongly.

A 30 Ω lamp is swapped for a 300 Ω lamp. Which opposes the current more strongly?

A heating wire is swapped for a wire with a smaller resistance. Does the new wire oppose the current more strongly or less strongly?

Write down the fact:

Resistance measures how strongly a component opposes the current through it.

Apply it:

A smaller resistance means a weaker opposition to the current.

The new wire opposes the current less strongly.
