← The field idea 3: drawing fields and sorting sources

Monopole or dipole? Count the types

A student says a bead carrying only negative charge is a monopole. Is the student correct?

Every field source you have met is one of two things: a monopole or a dipole. The sort takes one count. One type makes a monopole; two opposite types bound together make a dipole.

A charged sphere carrying only positive charge: one type, so it is a monopole. But a bar magnet: a north pole and a south pole bound together, so it is a dipole.

The first two sources: count the types each one carries.

A metal marble carries only positive charge. Is the marble a monopole or a dipole?

And a rod with positive charge at one end and negative charge at the other: two opposite types bound together, so it is also a dipole. And a lone mass: mass comes in one type, so it is a monopole.

Count the types: one type, monopole; two opposite types bound together, dipole.
One count decides every case: how many types does the source carry?

A magnetized screwdriver tip has a north pole and a south pole. Is the tip a monopole or a dipole?

A magnetized nail has a north pole at its head and a south pole at its tip. Is the nail a monopole or a dipole?

The nail carries two opposite poles, bound together in one object.

Two opposite types bound together make a dipole.

The nail is a dipole.

A comet travels alone, carrying mass and no charge. Is the comet a monopole or a dipole?

Your turn

Pick the source that is a monopole.

A source is sorted as a dipole. Which feature decides the sort?

Idris says any object carrying charge is a monopole. Which source shows Idris is wrong?
