Frequency

Coral squeezes a power drill's trigger. The bit spins 20 times each second.

That each-second count also deserves a name.

The number of complete revolutions an object makes each second is called its frequency.

The frequency's symbol is a lowercase f.

Frequency is measured in hertz, written Hz.

A frequency of 1 Hz means one complete revolution each second.

20 revolutions arrive in every second: the frequency is f = 20 Hz.

The drill bit completes 20 revolutions each second, so its frequency is f = 20 Hz.

The hertz counts happenings each second. In this topic, the happening is a revolution; later topics count other repeats with the same unit.

A faster spin packs more revolutions into each second: a greater frequency.

A blender blade completes 45 revolutions each second. What is its frequency?

Dagny says: 'A sprinkler head that completes 3 revolutions each second has a frequency of 3 Hz.' Is Dagny correct?

A box fan on its high setting completes 15 revolutions each second. State its frequency.

The each-second count is 15 revolutions.

The fan's frequency is f = 15 Hz.

The same fan on its low setting completes 5 revolutions each second. State its frequency now.

The each-second count is now 5 revolutions.

A slower spin means a lower frequency.

The fan's frequency is now f = 5 Hz.
